Godless Angel is a one man band formed by Derek Neibarger. He plays groove
death/thrash, that reminds me of Byzantine
and Lamb Of God and he has released three
full length albums and an EP prior to the release of The Conjuring Of Four, which was released on April 4.
The Conjuring Of
Four has 8
songs in total, with the first one being an intro, three interludes and four
metal songs. The interludes work as thematic bridges, where the songs move from
one to another. The composition is based heavily on crunchy riffs, lead guitars
and solos. In comparison with the previous release, Harvester Of Shadows, the lead guitars are more disciplined and
work with the riffs instead of surrounding them. They sound better and more
cohesive.
The
voice is rasp and dry and, along with the dry production, work well together,
but it is placed on top of the music and not along with it. The drums sound
flat and not interesting. I’d say that the strongest part of Godless Angel’s music is the combination
of riffs and lead guitars. The aesthetics of the music is not of my liking and it
fails to connect with me. Overall, The
Conjuring Of Four is a collection of mediocre songs, with some good moments
and the lead guitars being the highlight of the album.
